Uncle Tetsu's Japanese Cheesecake at Hillcrest Mall is a bakery stop that Richmond Hill locals turn to for a light, airy dessert experience. Known primarily for its signature Japanese-style cheesecakes, this spot draws people looking for something fluffy and delicately sweet rather than the dense, rich cheesecakes typical of Western bakeries.

The cheesecakes here have a unique texture—soft, jiggly, and almost cloud-like—which is evident whether you pick up the classic Original Cheese Tart or opt for one of the rotating specialties like the Matcha or Choco Cheesecake. People often mention that the cakes taste best fresh and warm, as they are baked daily on site. This fresh-baked quality makes it a good choice for dessert lovers craving a treat that isn’t overly sweet but has just the right amount of subtle flavor balance.

The atmosphere in the small shop inside the mall hovers between casual and purposeful; you’ll find customers dropping in mainly on weekends or after work hours, often picking up cakes to share with coworkers or as gifts for friends and family. Lines can form during peak times, but the upbeat staff helps keep things moving swiftly. However, the variety available can vary day-to-day—weekdays tend to offer more special flavors, while weekends might be limited to staples, so timing your visit matters if you’re chasing a particular item.

The presentation and packaging are thoughtfully done, adding to the experience of buying something a bit special rather than just a quick snack. Expect a clean, tidy spot typical of a busy mall bakery. Anecdotally, some visitors have noticed occasional brief closures or limited stock, so it’s worth visiting when the shop’s fully operational to avoid missing out.

Who will enjoy Uncle Tetsu’s the most? Those who appreciate subtle sweetness and fluffy textures in their desserts — especially fans of Japanese-style confections — will find this bakery a reliable stop. It fits well into a casual weekend or afternoon outing, when a light treat is just right, rather than a large celebratory cake.

Best time to visit: Weekdays for more variety and fresh flavors, but weekends work if you’re after the dependable classics. The shop’s mall location makes it a convenient option for shoppers and local workers in Richmond Hill.

I love the freshness of the cheesecakes. I went on Saturday, August 16th, and bought an Angel's Hat. I felt lucky because I hadn’t been able to find one in a while, although they didn’t have the cheesecake flavor of the month. Unfortunately, they don’t always have the full variety of products available. They usually offer special flavors during the week, but weekends are when I have the time to go. Also, they’ve removed the most visible menu from the store, so now we have to wait for it to appear on the TV screen again. The store is always clean, and the woman who works on Fridays and weekends is very kind and understanding with my children. I’m very grateful to them for always welcoming us with a smile.

This is hands down my favorite Japanese cheesecake shop — no question about it. The taste is always spot on: light, fluffy, perfectly balanced. No matter how many times I buy it, it’s just as good every single time. That soft, airy texture? Never disappoints. The price is super reasonable, which makes it even better. Whether I’m bringing it to share with coworkers, gifting it to someone, or just enjoying it myself — it’s always a hit. Honestly, it’s one of those things I just can’t walk past without picking up. For this quality and flavor at this price point, it’s completely unbeatable. Forever my No.1 Japanese cheesecake — absolutely flawless.

I tried the Japanese pancake and it was really good! So soft, fluffy, and not too sweet — just perfect. The packaging was super cute too! Everything looked so nice and thoughtful.

Uncle Tetsu offers incredibly light and fluffy Japanese-style cheesecakes that strike the perfect balance between subtle sweetness and delicate texture. The cakes are baked fresh and served warm, making them a must-try for dessert enthusiasts. While it can get busy, especially during peak hours, the friendly staff ensures the line moves quickly. The classic cheesecake is the star, but their madeleines are also worth a try. Prices are reasonable, making it a great spot for a delicious treat or a take-home dessert. Definitely worth a visit wherever you find one!

I went few days ago it was closed with sign saying will be back in 30min. but no one show up even after 30min. I went back to days later which was yesterday and got chocolate cheese cake. I taste more chocolate than cheese but still good I think. I read alot of hygiene problems on the review I hope they keep it clean and offer fresh cakes so people can enjoy for long term.
